Rodger Smith Obituary

RODGER LEVI WILKINSON SMITH

On Thursday, April 29, 2021 Rodger passed away in his sleep at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay On. He was deeply loved and respected by his wife Janet of 52 years. He was a great teammate with her always. Predeceased by his parents Levi and Beatrice (née Allan) of Dunnville, and brother Allan. Sadly missed by his sister-in-law Isabel Belanger (Michael Walton).

Sadly missed by first cousins on his father’s side: Warren Sebben, predeceased (Margaret); David Sebben (Ann); Shirley Mitchell (Blair, predeceased); Michael Toohey, predeceased (Lilian); James Toohey (Sharon); Isabel Hunsinger (Ronald); Frederick Smith (Betsy); and second and third cousins.

Sadly missed on his mother’s side by first cousins: Eleanor Kaufman (Carl, predeceased); Elizabeth Orr (Robert, predeceased); Rodger Allan, predeceased (Norma); and second and third cousins.

Much loved by the very special people in his life for whom he felt great affection: Rachel Murray (Scott); Ken Weston (Sarah); Jeff Downie (Alanah); and Michelle Walda.

Rodger thoroughly enjoyed his lifelong teaching career in the public elementary school system which always included physical education and/or coaching sports. As a founding member of the Lindsay Optimist Club in 1971, he was enriched for 50 years of membership serving the youth in the community in many activities and capacities including President. He was a Board member until his passing. Coaching soccer and the Oratorial Contest were two activities he particularly enjoyed. Rodger was a past District Governor as well as a Zone Lieutenant Governor.

A longtime member of the Friends of the City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library, Lindsay Branch, he served in many capacities during those years. He greatly enjoyed working with Janet in their extensive gardens, as well as his many years in the Lindsay Horticultural Society as a member and a President. Rodger also served as a Director in the Ontario Horticultural Association. He served on the Lindsay Exhibition Board of Directors for several years. He was a member of the Lindsay Men’s Probus Club from its inception. Rodger was truly a part of all that he met in life’s journey, and a man with many and varied interests.

Very special thanks during this challenging time to wonderful, supportive neighbours and friends of 38 years, Gary and Rosemary Schubert, as well as family and close friends. At the Ross Memorial Hospital, special thanks to Dr. Francis, as well as Drs. Dick and Krause. It is hard to find the words to adequately express the gratitude and thanks to the caring, kind, genuine staff on the two floors on which Rodger was a patient.

A private family service took place on Friday, May 7th, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery in Lindsay.
