Michael "Mike" Perkins Obituary

Passed away peacefully at his home on Kashagawigamog Lake in Minden, Ontario surrounded by his loving family. Mike was the loving husband of Colleen Perkins (nee Flynn). Proud father of Candice Perkins & Mike Perkins Jr. (Samantha). Adoring Papa of Cole Perkins. Predeceased by parents Harley & Shirley Perkins. Brother of Sandy Kennedy (Ron), Gary Perkins & Brian Perkins. Son in Law of Robert Flynn & the Late Margaret Flynn. Brother-in-law of Danny Flynn, the Late Bobby Flynn (survived by Shirley) & Tammy Bramhall (Bryan). Mike will be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family & many dear friends.

His children Mike Jr. and Candice have shared the following about his life:

Our dad was born in Oakville, Ontario in 1960. During his early years he moved to Burlington and attended Lord Elgin High School, where he met our mom, Colleen, who was the love of his life. The two married shortly after, setting the stage for a magical life together.

Dad joined the International Union of Operating Engineers (Local 793) in 1989, working for Lakeshore Sand Company in Hamilton. During his 35+ year career, he was a dedicated, professional, and hard-working employee and performed several specialized roles at the plant, from maintenance to operations; he excelled in his roles and became the Operating Manager in his later years. Our dad was a family man through and through. He always showed up for everyone in his life, especially the people that he loved. As a father, he devoted countless hours coaching Mike Jr. in both hockey and baseball and was always there to cheer Candice on at soccer games and gymnastics meets. Early morning practices, weeknight games, and tournaments all over the province became treasured parts of family life.

Music was always dad’s passion. From the basement sound system in our first family home in Burlington, down to the dock in Haliburton, the sounds of Supertramp, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and many other artists could often be heard blasting from his speakers. Life at the cottage was dad’s favourite. Annual family trips to Shebeshekong (“Shebe”) Resort in Parry Sound were the highlight of many sun-filled summers, where lasting memories were made with our friends and family. Mom and dad eventually settled in Minden Hills, fulfilling their dream of making the lake life their forever home and forging many wonderful friendships along the way. Dad loved spending his time on the water. Whether he was taking us wakeboarding or water skiing, or simply enjoying a sunset cruise down the shoreline, being behind the wheel of the boat was truly his happy place. When dad wasn’t on the lake, you could often find him on a beach. Mom and dad enjoyed many trips with family and friends to sunny destinations including the Bahamas, Mexico, and Aruba. Dad had a knack for the kitchen and loved to cook. He was known for grilling the perfect steak and enjoyed bringing everyone together for a barbeque or a big meal.

Dad eventually became “Papa,” and developed an inseparable bond with his grandson, Cole, during their years together. Countless hours were spent at the cottage exploring nearby trails and forests, boating and swimming at the sandbar, fishing, playing games, and embracing everything life had to offer. These are memories that will live on forever.

Our dad was our hero. He was loved by everyone he met, and he touched the lives of so many people. He will always be remembered for his zest for life, his radiant energy, and his infectious smile that could light up any room. Dad, you will be so deeply missed and never forgotten. We love you xoxo

The Perkins family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Haliburton County Paramed Staff and Nurses.
