John chose to end his suffering surrounded by the love and support of his family: his beloved wife, Janet Armstrong; his cherished children, Cathy Hunter (Chris), Kerry Mount (Barry), and Christopher Armstrong (Justine). He will be greatly missed by his dearly loved grandchildren, Chelsea and Catie Hunter and Georgia and Jack Armstrong, as well as by his many friends and relations.
John was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He made friends wherever he went and he was always willing to share his time and talents with others.
John was born in Toronto but spent a lot of his youth on a family farm in Sunderland, where he developed a love for the outdoor life. After graduation from Ryerson he lived in Orillia and eventually moved back to Toronto where he met Janet. In their over 40 years together they shared their love of music and theatre, extensive travel and the restoration of their beloved schoolhouse in Little Britain, which was a showcase of all of John’s many handyman talents. After their move to Lindsay John continued his years of volunteer work with the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, as well as wood carving, for which he won awards.
Our family would like to extend our thanks to John’s nurse, Jennifer Williams, and to Dr. Naomi Ecob for their exemplary care and concern for John over the past years, and to Dr MacMillan for his compassion. If you wish, donations to the Kawartha Lakes Food Source in John’s honour would be appreciated. In accordance with John’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial reception will be held at Lakeland Funeral Home on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
