James Michael Whalen
Jim is finally at peace after enduring so much, surrounded by the love of those who meant the world to him, on Monday, May 26, 2025 at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay.
At the age of 74, Jim was the beloved husband of Wendy (Corley), whom he cared for and cherished for over 40 years. In their final chapter together, it was Wendy’s honour to care for Jim with unwavering devotion until his peaceful passing. Their love was a bond of strength, kindness, and quiet partnership that inspired everyone around them.
When Jim met Wendy, she was a single mother raising her eight-year-old daughter, Carrie. Jim didn’t hesitate — he saw not only his soulmate in Wendy, but a family he could pour his heart into. He embraced fatherhood with Carrie (Wooldridge) and later on welcomed her husband, Stephen ‘Woolly’, as a dedicated son-in-law.
As ‘Pa’, Jim was everything a grandchild could hope for — a source of pride, laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love. He held a special bond with his precious granddaughter, Cierra Hallett (Clint Harford), and his adored grandson, Seth Hallett, both of whom brought him immense joy and he was endlessly proud of. He wholeheartedly embraced the next generation as a bonus great grandpa to Emmett and Audrey, with a special excitement for the newest great-grandchild soon to arrive — never missing a chance to offer a name suggestion.
‘You will be our sunshine forever, Pa’
Jim defined family not by biology, but by love and loyalty. He will be deeply missed by the entire Corley family: Stephen (Jane), Judy (Don), Marlene, Margie (BK), and Mary Ellen, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is survived by Joanne, Mike (Sylvia), Ray, Julia, Krista and many cousins. Predeceased by Bob and Doug.
Jim had a special place in his heart for animals — always allowing Carrie to keep the strays she ‘found’ and most recently spoiling Izzy with love and Cheerios. Izzy loved him just as much in return. Family gatherings meant everything to him, and he rarely missed a chance to cook. His secret spaghetti sauce, turkey roasted in a bag, and legendary Christmas shortbread cookies were staples of treasured family traditions. He always baked the cookies in generous batches to ensure there were enough for all family, friends and coworkers.
Born in Peterborough and raised in Omemee, Jim always stayed close to the country life. He often spoke of the fun times playing hockey and attending tournaments with Emily Omemee Oldtimers and coaching Carrie’s teams. After more than 30 dedicated years at General Motors, he retired — ready to spend more time with his grandchildren and perhaps sneak off to a favourite casino now and then. Even in retirement, Jim stayed active, sharing his wealth of knowledge at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Ever patient and generous with his time, he was known for taking the time to teach and explain, never turning down a question or a chance to help someone build something better.
Jim and Wendy shared a love of travel with their favourite companions, Stephen and Jane, enjoying memorable cruises, camping, portaging and road trips across both the east and west coasts of Canada — with the cruise through the Panama Canal holding a special place in their hearts.
A quiet and stubborn man, with a heart full of love, Jim touched the lives of many and asked for little in return.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Jim will be laid to rest privately at Riverside Cemetery in Lindsay, surrounded by those who loved him most.
In his memory, donations to the Ross Memorial Hospital or a local animal shelter would be deeply appreciated — a tribute as warm and kind as the man himself.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the exceptional nurses and doctors at Ross Memorial Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Paramed Homecare, the Kawartha Lakes Paramedics and his lifelong friend Ray McGill. Your compassion, professionalism, and unwavering care for Jim and our family will never be forgotten.
