For many months I have been thinking about our dear friend Jaan and reflecting upon the laughs and debates, the kindness and the humor behind our interactions over the years. I always admired Jaan for his curiosity about the world, his keen intellect and goofy sense of humor. Although we lived in different worlds and countries for many years, we managed to maintain contact, sharing slivers of our lives. I believe he is driving around in an old Hummer, smiling down upon us with a twinkle in his eye. I miss you my friend.

Jaan and I always had engaging conversations in the Zoology Dept. Perhaps our most passionate topic was the situation and future of the Baltic states, especially Estonia and Latvia. Since we saw 'eye to eye' on almost every topic, it helped to reinforce our own world views and reassure ourselves that we were not lone voices in the wilderness. Thanks Jaan. Your being has made my being a better one.
