Geraldine Mary Smith (nee Skinner)

It is with deep appreciation for a life well-lived that the family of Geraldine Mary Smith announce her peaceful passing on Saturday June 6, 2026. Born on April 25, 1941 in Chatham Ontario to Harry and Greta Skinner, Gerry built a life defined by family, creativity, and love. 

Gerry is survived by her husband Kenneth Smith, son Peter Smith (Karen), daughter Roberta Paschkowiak (Ralph), grandchildren Abbey Caldwell (John), Matthew Smith (Maddy), and Christine Paschkowiak. She is also survived by her sister Marlene Lowther. 

She was predeceased by her father and mother, sister Roberta Smith (Ron), brother Doug Skinner, and brother-in-law Garth Lowther. 

Gerry met the love of her life, Ken, while attending Central Collegiate in Oshawa. They married in 1961 and went on to share 64 wonderful years together. Theirs was a marriage rooted in love, respect, and steadfast partnership. Over the years, they created countless cherished memories: summer camping trips with their family, road trips across Canada and the United States, and later, winters spent together in Florida. No matter where life took them, one tradition remained constant: a daily game of cribbage, where Gerry generously allowed Ken the satisfaction of winning most days.

Gerry excelled at all things creative and brought her artistic talent to every area of her life. Whether that came in the form of painting Christmas designs on the windows of downtown Oshawa businesses, opening a ceramics business, or sewing dolls for the children in hospital care; Gerry rejoiced in sharing her art with her community. 

Gerry’s family however were the greatest beneficiaries of her creative gift. Christmas dinner was served on a tablecloth she hand-embroidered, adding a new stitched message each year by carefully tracing notes written by family members. Halloween found Gerry with a paintbrush in hand, transforming eager grandchildren into zombies, witches, or cats, making sure each costume was finished with the perfect artistic touch.

The family extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Ross Memorial Hospital, including the palliative team. Your kindness, communication, and commitment to Gerry were of great comfort during this difficult time. 

“From the moment our spirits bonded these many years ago, everyday with Geraldine has been a good day. Love you forever - goodnight sweetheart, Ken.” 

A private graveside service will be held with the family welcoming others to join them afterwards at Woodville Town Hall, 100A King Street, Woodville, Ontario on Thursday, June 18 at 2:30 in the afternoon.
