Collett, Derek

born in Shanghai, China in 1929, died on 20th April, 2007 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Derek and his family returned to England in 1938, then was sent with his brother Peter to spend the war years in Victoria, B.C., where they both attended University School; Derek transferred to St. Andrew's College in Aurora for his final year, 1945. Derek and Peter enlisted in the RCAF in 1948; Derek spent 28 years in the RCAF, serving in Ontario, Germany, Alberta and British Columbia. Derek will be mourned by his partner of 55 years, Helen, his children Jeff and Sheila and their partners Pam and Ben, and his grandchildren Kristina, Heather, Leanne and Wesley. Derek will also be mourned by his brother Peter, sister-in-law Margaret and nephew Michael, of Victoria, B.C., and in England by his sister Sara Lankester and her husband George, and by Sara's two daughters, Caroline and Anna. Those who knew Derek will remember his natural athletic ability which enabled him over the years to enjoy cricket, rugby, football, soccer, track, and, most recently, tennis with "the guys" at the Fenelon Falls Tennis Club, and for his sense of fair play. Cremation has taken place. Friends who would like to remember Derek are invited to join his family at 4 Heritage Way in Lindsay on 29th April from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. The family is profoundly appreciative of the compassionate and tender care given to Derek and to his family at the close of his life by the entire staff at the Palliative Care Unit in Ross Memorial Hospital, and by doctors Peter Petrosoniak and Martin Young. Thanks also to the Canadian Cancer Society, Don Scollick and his team of volunteer drivers. Final arrangements are being made by Wise Choice Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Lindsay, 705-324-1988.
