Benson Benovoy

"Say not in grief, 'He is no more,' but in thankfulness that he was."

Benson Harvey Benovoy passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay in his 80th year, following complications from severe pneumonia.

Born in Ottawa on June 5, 1946, Benson lived a life devoted to music, learning, and personal growth. He was predeceased by his mother, Lillian; his father, Harry; and his sister, Nancy. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Michal, of Israel, as well as by his many friends, students, and colleagues whose lives he touched.

Known for his technical mastery and extensive teaching career, Benson was a highly accomplished professional musician, classical guitar recitalist, and instructor. He was a dedicated, passionate, and exceptionally talented musician—a gifted teacher, mentor, and virtuoso.

A perfectionist by nature, Benson held himself to the highest standards. His pursuit of excellence made him a remarkable teacher: patient, encouraging, meticulous, and deeply committed to helping his students discover and develop their potential through music. The results of his dedication were reflected in the achievements of his students, who earned 14 Royal Conservatory of Music Silver Medals—an accomplishment of which he was immensely proud.

Benson's education and experience were extensive, and his determination to continually grow and excel led him in many directions. In addition to his accomplishments as a guitarist, he was an accomplished orchestral violinist, serving as Assistant Concertmaster with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Orchestra, Concertmaster with the Ottawa Youth Orchestra, and conductor of the Victoria Guitar Orchestra.

A minimalist at heart, Benson lived simply and thoughtfully, valuing experiences and learning over possessions. Throughout his life, he made his home in various places, including Vancouver, Peterborough, Thailand, and Israel, embracing each chapter with curiosity and openness.

Benson was also a deeply spiritual person. Drawing from his Jewish cultural heritage and ethical traditions, he explored meditation, Buddhist philosophy, and Zen studies. He was proficient in several languages and maintained a lifelong love of learning, reflection, and personal growth.

Those who knew Benson will remember his warm personality, sense of humour and generous spirit. He found joy in simple pleasures, including a good book, meaningful conversation, and his favourite Lindt Dubai Chocolate. He also enjoyed studying The I Ching, or Book of Changes, finding wisdom and inspiration in its teachings.

Benson leaves behind a legacy of music, discipline, curiosity, and kindness. Through his teaching, his performances, and the countless lives he touched, his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
