Alan Croome Obituary

Alan Bruce Croome, on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in his 84th year, peacefully, at Ross Memorial Hospital.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Sheila Croome, his daughter, Dr. Alison Croome (Ron Makowichuk) of Nanaimo, B.C., his son, Malcolm Croome (Erika) of Vancouver, B.C., brother David (Genevieve) of Melbourne, Australia, grandchildren Alex and Clara, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Jean and Clifford, and brother Max.

Alan was a life-long educator, teacher, and administrator for 45 years, working in Canada and Australia.  He was hired by the Victoria County Board of Education in 1992 as the Curriculum Consultant in Gifted Education.  This gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the county, meeting fellow teachers, administrators, and students in both Elementary and Secondary schools.  He held the position of Head of Special Education at LCVI when he retired in 2005.

Alan was an avid tennis player and his dream was, one day, to travel to Wimbledon.  In retirement, he planned to write a novel, learn to fly an airplane, and show Sheila the world through his eyes.  Unfortunately, due to ill health, he was unable to accomplish these goals.

His students are his legacy.  They inspired him as he inspired them.  Over the years, many have reached out to thank Alan for his belief in them and for his guidance and exceptional wisdom.  His favourite quote was from Lewis Carroll “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there”.  Have a direction in life.  If you wait too long, life will pass you by.

At Alan’s request, there will be no service.  Cremation has taken place.  Donations may be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes or the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation.
