Mackey, Anne Elizabeth (nee Perry)

A woman of infinite love, compassion and understanding, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2008 in Lindsay Ontario. Anne was born October 7, 1923 in Florenceville, New Brunswick (NB). After obtaining here Teacher’s Certificate, Anne went to work supporting the war effort by working tirelessly in a munitions factory. In 1945 she married her high school sweetheart, Bob. And, on his discharge from the air force, the two headed to UNB where Bob obtained his B.Sc. (Forestry) and Anne supported the new and growing family. In 1950, Anne followed Bob into the wilds of northern Ontario where Bob worked as a logging engineer and Anne became the town’s “one-room school teacher”. Anne strongly believed in the importance of children receiving a good education. For more than 40 years, in Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and in particular Lindsay, she taught countless children from kindergarten to grade eight. She strived to ensure that each of her students received a strong foundation upon which to succeed. Anne’s favourite grade was eight. She would often comment that grade eight kids “were old enough to know better but young enough to still try.” As proud as we are of her as a teacher, her greatest accomplishments can be seen in her family. She and Bob were married for over 63 years and still went to bed each night with a “kiss” and an “I love you”. She passed away holding Bob’s hand. The love and commitment Bob and Anne shared set the standard for their children. In their early years of retirement, Bob and Anne travelled throughout the US and Canada. In the later years, when Anne’s arthritis impeded her ability to move, Bob meticulously and lovingly cared for her – ensuring she could stay in her home with the flowers, birds and animals she enjoyed so much. Anne is greatly missed by her beloved husband, Bob; her children, Marjorie (Earl Horlick), Andrew and Constance (Robert Fitzpatrick); her grandchildren, Gordon and Andrew; and her great grandchildren, Cadence and Gabriel. We will always remember her for the wonderful memories she helped create, the words of wisdom she provided and the love she unconditionally showered on each of us. We thank Dr. Francis and the health care professionals of the palliative care unit at the Ross Memorial Hospital for their warm care of our mother. We extend a special thank you to Jane Porter of Access Ontario and to Gwen Dawson for the kindness and care they showed mom over the last few years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Parker Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 19 Moose Road (corner of McLauglin and Moose Road), Lindsay, on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. As our mom supported many charities, in lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to the charity of your choice.
