Calvin Thistle

Peacefully on Sunday, February 4th,2024 with his wife and son at his side, Calvin Thistle in his 93rd year went to be with the Lord.

Calvin Thistle was born in Hickmans Harbour, Newfoundland to Captain Alexander and Gladys Thistle.  At age 16 he travelled to Toronto where he worked as a Lithographer until he retired in 1993.  He met Phyllis Bursey also from Newfoundland and they married in 1956.  They were blessed with three children, Linda, Calvin and Kevin. They lived in Scarborough for over 50 years where he faithfully attended Wesley Chapel Free Methodist Church, the congregation was more like family. Cal spent countless hours with family and friends at their cottage in Hastings where he loved to spend time in his garden tending to his many flowers.  They sold their cottage in 2016.  After he retired Cal spent many happy times visiting Hickman’s and Florida.

Cal is now at rest with beloved son Calvin Thistle (1994). He was predeceased by mother Gladys Thistle (1940), father Captain Alexander Thistle (1970), stepmother Ethel (1999), his two brothers and their wives Roy (Eve) & Harvey Bector (Marion), brother in law Rex Clarke, sister & brother in law Shirley & Reginald Winters. 

Cal is loved by his devoted wife of 67 years Phyllis Thistle (nee Bursey). Cherished by daughter Linda Coates (Glen) & son Kevin Thistle (Shanda) & brother Jim Thistle (Melvina) & sister Laura Clarke (Harry). Missed by daughter in laws Rhonda Thistle & Heather Haynes. Forever remembered by granddaughters Amanda Whelan (Robert), Emma Coates (Reece), Hannah Coates (Nate) & grandsons Calvin Thistle & Christian Thistle. He leaves behind his cherished great granddaughters Ava Whelan, Ivy Whelan & Violet Verdonk. 

He will be missed by many nieces and nephews as well as a large circle of neighbours & friends. 

Please join us for a Celebration of Life Service at Lakeland Funeral Centre (19 Moose Road, Lindsay) on Tuesday February 27th, 2024 at noon (12PM). A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow the service. 

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
